The following information I took from Liturgical Living. (https://www.teachingcatholickids.com/when-dorothy-day-was-a-child-saints-for-kids/ - :~:text=Action is powered by prayer,on behalf of justice fruitful.
I would like to use the experience to reflect how experience are holy ground and assist us in living out the Gospel values.
When the terrible earthquake of 1906 devastated San Francisco, Dorothy and her family were living across the bay in Oakland. When refugees traveled from San Francisco to Oakland seeking shelter and food, her mother and their neighbors worked day and night to help them, setting up a soup kitchen, putting up tents, and offering every spare piece.
This outpouring of loving community for those in need left a deep impression on eight-year-old Dorothy. We might even say it was the seed for the Catholic Worker Movement. As a young woman, over and over Dorothy asked herself, “Why? Why can’t the world be just and caring so that everyone can have enough.

My experience happened during the summer 1998 as I was assisting two other Ursuline Sisters at a Parish. The Parish ministered to migrant families who came for the summer to pick tobacco. I saw the conditions of many of the places that the families lived with very little ventilation and space. I saw how the parishioners shared what they had and provided services so that they could live with dignity.
After this I became more attentive to the people that crossed my path. I saw their beauty and learned to listen and act with a compassionate heart to those I encountered in the inner city in a parochial school, volunteering at Catholic Charities in their ESL tutoring for refugees, and this led me to CWA.
