Sign Up Day for Project Horizon
On Saturday, February 28th we launched the "Project Horizon" Music Program with
an introduction and orientation open to the youth and parents of the inner-city community in which we serve. It started with
a demonstation of the various instruments offered, we then encouraged each child to give each instrument a try. We are
proud to share that we currently have twelve students enrolled with 4 on guitar, 2 on bass guitar, 4 on percussion and
2 on keyboards. With 2 on vocals as well.

A Blessed, Wonderful Gift!
This program is made possible from a one-time monetary grant from the Sister's
of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, through the St. Ann Legacy Foundation. Sister Catherine
Walsh is a member of the Sister's of Charity of St. Augustine. This grant is to provide the
initial funds to obtain the base equipment, educational materials, maintenance and support for the first year. There
is also funds in reserve to gift each student their very own new instrument at the completion/graduation of the program. We
are very grateful for this gift and the opportunity to share the gifts of music and musicianship with these children and friends!
Our current students enrolled range
from 8 years of age, to 16. They have very little, if any previous backround or instruction in instrumental music. This program
is designed to provide them a safe, friendly Christian environment within their community, to enjoy an exciting and fun approach
to learning and sharing the gift of music and friendship. The curriculum is such to allow for each student to progress at
their own pace, while at the same time, keeping them engaged and motivated with positive reinforcement, incentives and rewards.
Starting with Module One, they receive one-on-one, private instruction each week, along with materials to study at home. As
they progress through subsequent modules they will come together to play and perform as a group. Reading music, history, theory,
composition, arranging, composing and crafting and recording their own music will be also be part of their education.
Music is a universal language, one that transcends barriers of race, age, gender and social or economic class.
Cultivating an appreciation for music among children is important as making and listening to music can enhance and promote
language development, coordination, creativity, social skills, pride, self esteem, as well as a better understanding of one's
history and culture. Since public schools have cut-back and/or eliminated music from their curriculum, it is up to the volunteers
to bring the magic of music to our children. By building bridges of hope we will foster solid relationships with
the youth, parents, community and volunteers associated with this program and will develop social and cultual harmony,
to enhance the quality of life and opportunities. These children shall possess a new confidence, talent and appreciation
of different cultures and the arts. This positive influence and experience will inspire other dimensions in education,
religion, work-ethic and helping others.
